Safety

Kind by design.

Most bad dating experiences come from apps that reward speed and volume. Lately is slower on purpose. Here’s what else we do.

On the app

Verified profiles

Anyone can take a quick selfie check, and a person on our team compares it with their photos. Verified profiles get a badge. It tells you someone is who their photos say; it can’t guarantee how they behave, so the tips below still matter.

Kind endings

Every new conversation ends with a private choice on day three: keep talking, or end kindly. Ending sends a short, friendly goodbye, and you can close any chat the same way at any time. Chats that go quiet close on their own after a few days, with a goodbye too.

Only a rough distance

We never show your exact location. Others see a rough distance, like “14 min away”.

Report and block

From any profile, chat or moment, tap ••• and choose Report or Block. Blocking is instant and silent: they can’t see you or contact you again, and we don’t tell them. Every report is read by a person, and we act on anything that breaks our rules, up to removing people from Lately for good.

Our rules

Meeting in person

We nudge you to meet, because that’s where chemistry happens. A few simple habits make it safer:

If something goes wrong

If you’re in danger, call 112. For non-urgent police matters in the Netherlands, call 0900-8844. You can also report someone to us in the app or mail [email protected], and we’ll help however we can, including sharing information with the police when the law allows.

If you’ve experienced sexual violence, the Centrum Seksueel Geweld is there for you, day and night, on 0800-0188 (free).
